needs to be of a high level within
an organization. The agency also
acknowledges that the ICAO
definition of accountable executive
proposed in the original NPRM
could present compliance and
operational challenges for many
publicly owned airports.
While some of these changes
will be welcome news to the
airport community, the AAAE SMS
Working Group and staff carefully
are reviewing the SNPRM on behalf
of our members. Throughout the
comment period, it’s important that
FAA hears from all stakeholders
who may be impacted by the
proposed changes. Feedback on the
key elements of the proposal, as
well as potential administrative,
recordkeeping and oversight
burdens need to be analyzed. AAAE
encourages its members to use this
opportunity to have their voices
heard. All airports are welcome to
connect with the working group
during the comment period.
Ultimately, whether the final
rule contains some, or all, of
these changes and requirements,
the rulemaking process finally
is nearing a close. The airport
industry can expect regulations
regarding SMS to be made final
within the next year or two.
