I have thoroughly
enjoyed my year as AAAE
Chair. As I reflect on the
year, I think the most
enjoyable aspect of it
has been time spent with
each of the chapters.
As you may have ascertained, I am a sports fan. I love
sports of all sorts. I live for the
competition, and I enjoy the drama.
In my youth and as an adult, one
individual I have looked up to is
Muhammad Ali. “The greatest,” as
he was affectionately known, was
the three-time heavyweight boxing
champion. Who could forget the
memorable fights that he had with
Joe Frazier and George Foreman? As
I reflect on the time that he spent as
champion, it seems to have passed
all too quickly. So, too, has my time
as Chair of AAAE.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my
year as AAAE Chair. As I reflect on
the year, I think the most enjoyable
aspect of it has been time spent
with each of the chapters. The
membership and the leadership
in each of the chapters have been
wonderful. The Southwest Chapter
of AAAE is my original chapter.
It is fitting that the first chapter
meeting that I attended as Chair
was during the Southwest Chapter
annual conference. It was great
to see old friends and make new
acquaintances, and it was also great
to get back out to the Southwest.
Next, I attended the Great Lakes
Chapter annual conference, which
took place in South Bend, Indiana.
This chapter is unique in that entire
families attend the conference. In
fact, there was a separate program
for young people. Later, I had the
opportunity to attend the Northeast
Chapter annual conference,
which took place in Wilmington,
Delaware. As of this writing, the
last chapter meeting that I attended
was the Northwest Chapter annual
conference, which took place in Big
Sky, Montana. Big Sky is beautiful,
and I would encourage anyone who
has an opportunity to go there to do
so. The hospitality was excellent,
and the conference was superb.
Also as of this writing, I have yet to
attend the Southeast Chapter and
the South Central Chapter annual
conferences. I’m looking forward to
attending both. If the other chapter
meetings are any indication, I will
have a great time, meet old friends
and make new friends, and I hope
represent the organization well.
All six chapters have up-and-coming leaders whom I think you’ll
see on the national stage in a
Shortly after assuming the role
of Chair, I had the great privilege
of visiting AAAE headquarters.
As part of that visit, I had the
opportunity to attend the AAAE
staff meeting. My take-away
from that meeting is that AAAE
is an organization staffed by
many dedicated and committed
individuals. That was apparent
from the level of engagement that
individuals exhibited during
the staff meeting. I also had an
opportunity to walk around the
facility and engage various team
members. They were all focused on
the task at hand, and there was a
high level of teamwork and esprit de
corps. I take my hat off to President
and CEO Todd Hauptli for building
such a great team.
