have been conducting independent, scripted tests
that include videotapes of found anomalies. We
next will meet to discuss our findings and move
forward collaboratively to address any open items
considered to be risks. It is our goal to reach
swift consensus and begin phase two. The second
phase will complete deployment at the remaining
exits. It is our target to have this completed by
the second quarter of 2014. While the cost of this
project is not insignificant, we have calculated an
approximate payback of three years.
Exit lane breach control systems control traffic
movement through a point but cannot completely
mitigate all security risks as an independent
system. Additional security components augment
reliability and lower security risk. Elements
such as CCTV coverage, alarm monitoring and
proven response protocol create a total system
that provides a solution with a risk level that is
extremely low. Additional technology, such as
video analytics, may even enhance further the
level of security.
As with all security systems in any environment,
the greatest question is, “How much risk is
acceptable”? Success in answering this question
as it relates to security tools within an airport
environment rely on partnerships developed with
law enforcement, TSA and other business partners,
but, even more importantly, in realizing that most
technological tools are merely a component to a
layered approach for security.
In U.S. airports today, security acumen is
generally driven by assessing risk, weighing facts
with perception and balancing cost with return
on investment. Careful consideration also must be
given to impact on both customers and operations.
There are viable technological solutions available
for exit lane breach control that will function well
in almost any type of airport environment. While
this may not be the solution pursued by all, it’s
one that has been tested and proven in hundreds
of airports around the world for more than a
decade. Sea-Tac now proudly joins the handful of
U.S. airports that utilize exit lane breach control
technology as an economical and highly functional
method to control access from public to sterile
