THE HOW-TO OF PRODUCING A CONCESSIONS WORKSHOP
BY TIFFANY GREEN
The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) offers numerous opportunities each year to make businesses of all sizes and specialties aware of concessions
opportunities at both O’Hare International and
Midway International airports.
The CDA provides two types of concessions outreach events: open houses and workshops. This
article primarily will focus on how the CDA structures a workshop, which introduces individuals
and companies to the bid process.
CONCESSIONS OPEN HOUSES
Open houses are held at least once a year with
the purpose of bringing together business owners,
retailers, service providers, suppliers, airport
concessions disadvantaged business enterprise
(ACDBE) companies, master concessionaires,
developers and city departments. More than 200
people attended the CDA’s open house event in
August 2012. These events provide a valuable
preview for upcoming concessions opportunities at
Chicago’s airports and allow attendees to network
with each other.
Many potential concessionaires attend the
free quarterly workshops led by the CDA in
collaboration with the Chicago Department
of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection
(BACP). The CDA promotes each concessions
workshop through Web alerts, which reach more
than 8,000 subscribers. The BACP promotes its
workshops, including the airport concessions
workshop, via Web alerts that also are issued to
thousands of subscribers.
